A new generation of young women will be enthralled with Meryl Streep’s portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in ‘The Iron Lady,’ but will the rose tinted spectacles of Hollywood rewrite history and sell us a feminist icon or will her policies speak for themselves?

The great irony of Margaret Thatcher’s premiership is that as the first female Prime Minister of Britain she was not welcomed as a feminist role model. Nor did she invite it. She was a role model for power, of staunch political will. A right wing woman not a woman standing for the rights of women as the feminist slogan put it.

The UN – An exclusive Club?

 

With the United States set to veto the Palestinian bid for UN membership it is interesting to assess the reasons why and what the future of the Middle East peace process looks like.  I am not naive enough to remind people of beginnings and the ideals of President Woodrow Wilson and his League of Nations, to ask why these are not being upheld by the ‘Champion’ of democracy, America. The reality restricts the leaders of the world today, the consequences of a decision such as this could be costly.

What Are The Tories Up To?

I am writing this article, with a cup of green tea, because I like to experiment once and a while, whilst watching the ITV news and now the channel 4 news, and I am simply, shocked, angry and quite upset about what is happening to the country, the frankly rushed NHS reform, the richest trying to become richer and people leaving work to go into the benefit system to pay for child care, its giving my future a simply bleak outlook.
